(Incomplete) List of Contributors to BDHeaRT
It is not easy to list all the organisations and individuals who have made a contribution to the Batticaloa Disaster Health Response Team effort. However, two weeks on from the tsunami disaster, we would like to acknowledge the roles played by a number of persons and agencies. The following list is in no particular order and is not exhaustive. We regret if we have failed to record or have mis-identified anyone who helped out – but there was little opportunity to take down details in the rush of the initial emergency response.
Terre des hommes: (Provided HQ for first week, stationary, medicines, two jeeps since the beginning, seven staff members, daily lunch and water for the medical teams and other staff.
Handicap International: (Contributed shelves for the stores, stationary, two vehicles since the beginning, six staff members).
Volunteer Services Overseas: (Provided four persons - two in the field and two in the pharmacy)
German Technical Cooperation/GTZ: (Contributed one computer, one printer and one jeep punctually every day)
CORDAID: (Contributed one computer, one photocopy machine, one nurse from 10th of January and two vehicles for a few months)
WHO: (Donated Rs. 500 000 and provided technical and moral support in form of visiting experts in disaster public health and water & sanitation)
UNDP: (Provided one car for a week)
World Vision: (Provided three cars on the first day)
Swiss Cooperation/SDC: (Contributed one vehicle for a week)
Psychosocial Support Programme: (Contributed one vehicle for five days and t-shirts for the BDHeaRT teams)
Volunteers: Sri Lanka Red Cross (assisted with the pharmacy), Anandkumar Arulanantham (data entry)and many many others...!
Donors: Bala Emmanuel (Contributed one vehicle and financial support for operational work), Norwegian visitors, unnamed contributors from overseas and Colombo
Batticaloa General Hospital: (Very strong support in terms of medicines, doctors and nursing staff)
School of Nursing: (Provided large numbers of nursing students each day)
DPDHS participation: (Contributed drivers and vehicles punctually each morning, doctors, midwives, public health inspectors, medicines and office assistants, including the invaluable Direshan)
Ministry of Health: (Contributed technical advice, coordination and encouragement)
Visiting Medical Teams from other provinces and other countries: (Provided doctors, nursing and paramedical staff, vehicles, medicines and much goodwill). These teams included the following: HCF, Colombo, Indian Medical Team, Jaffna University students & staff, Lunugala Medical Team, MDM Greece, Northwest Medical Team, Kandy Teaching Hospital, Ruphavahini Corporation, Yale University team, David Peiris Motor Company Ltd and Medical Professionals from Polannaruwa, Mannar, Badulla
